Personal Property Coverage

July 25, 2012 By Jon DeKok

Homeowners policies include coverage for personal property like clothes, furniture, yard maintenance equipment, etc.  Typically this personal property is covered on a named perils basis (fire, theft, est.) and a replacement cost basis (replaced with new).

That sounds good so far, right?  However, most policies also limit coverage on specific types of personal property such as – jewelry, fine arts, silverware, furs, guns, etc. For instance, you may have $10,000 worth of jewelry, and your basic homeowners policy limits it to $3,000.  If you had a loss, you might be a little unhappy.

Most companies offer a “Personal Articles Floater” endorsement that allows you to schedule the specific higher valued items. This endorsement normally gives “all risk” type coverage with no deductible. The cost is usually between 30 cents to 90 cents per $100 of coverage per year.

If you have one or more of these higher valued items, check your policy to see what the current limits are or feel free to call or email me. I will be happy to discuss this or any insurance needs you have.  507-226-8121

Trust & Branding

July 17, 2012 By Jon DeKok

My wife Joy and I have been feeding birds in our yard for many years.  One of the things we like to do is put out grape jelly for the Orioles.  This year is no exception.  We purchased the same brand of jelly as before, but something had changed.  The consistency of the jelly was different. We put it out anyway, trusting the brand we had purchased.  I’m not sure what they did differently, but the birds were not as fond of it as before.  We tried a new, jelly, and the birds are loving it again.

The price of the new brand is a little higher than the original, but the birds we feed, like it a lot and know the difference.

Are you in a similar situation with your current insurance?

As an independent insurance agent, I represent over 12 insurance companies that many of you have heard of. They all have A or higher ratings by the insurance rating companies. This means they are financially stable and treat their policy holders well.

They are trusted.

We are confident we can offer most of our clients, and prospective clients, better coverage than they now have at better prices. Over 50% of the time, it is a substantial savings. Are you getting the best value for your insurance needs or has something changed? Please call (507-226-8121) or email me (dekokinsgroup@gmail.com). I will find the best value I have to offer, and present it for your review.

It’s easy!  It’s free! And, it may save you a lot of money!

Personal Injury Liability

June 4, 2012 By Jon DeKok

Have you ever heard someone slander another individual?

Most likely you have.  In a lot of  cases where someone talks or writes about someone else in a negative or hurtful way, no legal action is taken.  However,  In the world of insurance, we see the legal consequences of this type of behavior.

Here is Traveler’s definition of  “Personal Injury” in their HO-82 endorsement.

 DEFINITIONS

The following definition is added: “Personal injury” means injury arising out of one or more of the following offenses, but only if the offense was committed during the policy period:

1. False arrest, detention or imprisonment

2. Malicious prosecution

3. The wrongful eviction from, wrongful entry into, or invasion of the right of private occupancy of a room, dwelling or premises that a person occupies, committed by or on behalf of its owner, landlord or lessor

4. Oral, written or electronic publication of material that slanders or libels a person or organization or disparages a person’s or organization’s goods, products or services

5. Oral, written or electronic publication of material that violates a person’s right of privacy.

Personal Injury liability coverage is an optional coverage on most homeowners insurance policies.  Please feel free to contact me to discuss further and see if your policy includes this protection.

A Couple of Insurance Myths – Busted

April 16, 2012 By Jon DeKok

These comments are shared as fact. . .when in fact they are false.

  • No-fault insurance means it can’t be my fault.

No fault insurance does not mean that if you caused an accident you’re not responsible. This part of your insurance policy allows all parties to get payment for their immediate medical needs while the insurance companies of all parties are deciding who is going to pay.

Call your insurance agent to find out what no-fault insurance means in the state you live in. Most policies cover medical expenses (up to specific limits) and lost wages (for a specific amount of time) no matter who is at fault in an accident.

  • My friend borrowed my car, so she  has to pay for the damages.

If you let someone else drive your car, and that person is involved in an accident, your insurance policy – not hers – will cover the damages.

Insurance follows the car, not the driver.

  • My laptop was stolen out of my car, but I have great auto insurance, so it’s covered.

Most car insurance policies don’t cover this kind of personal property. Your laptop or other stolen items might be covered by your homeowner’s policy, but your deductible will apply.

If you have insurance questions or want a quote, call me at 507-226-8121.

2 Kinds of Insurance You May Not Need

April 11, 2012 By Jon DeKok

Several years ago when Joy and I went on our first big vacation, we rented a car. She was surprised I didn’t buy the rental-car  insurance, and as we pulled out of the lot asked me if we were covered. My answer: Yes. Another time an insurance company called her and offered her extra coverage on her credit card. She’d been working for me for a while by then and told the guy on the phone she’d call him back after she talked to her credit card company and her current insurance agent. He hung up without giving her his number.
Here’s why we didn’t need the extra policies either time:

Credit Card Fraud Insurance: The Federal government requires credit card companies to provide a substantial amount of protection to credit card holders. To be sure you’re covered, call your credit card company and ask or check their website to see how they cover their clients in cases of credit card fraud and stolen or lost cards.

Note: Stolen identity is a different subject – one I’ll provide information on in another blog post.

Rental Car Insurance: If you carry full coverage on your car insurance, it’s likely that coverage will extend to the car you rent. Before a renting a car, call  your agent to find out what your policy already covers. Then, you can avoid the pressure to buy more at the car rental counter with confidence.

If you have any questions about your insurance, give me a call at 507-226-8121.
